Flamenco En El Moro

March 27th, 2008

This bulería was the beginning of The Third Root project. With a desire to explore further the Gnawa music, Camilo as a musician and Reed as a filmmaker, they separately went to Essaouira, Morocco to experience The Festival of Gnawa and World Music of 2006. Coincidentally (or not so coincidentally) they met for the first time as they ended up sharing a house that was being lived in by mutual friends. Inspired by each others’ art, and enthralled by the beautiful surroundings of the ancient medina of Essaouira - a port town the has been host to Phoneacian, Roman, Arab, Andalusian, Spanish, and Portuguese cultures - this piece was made. Shortly after, Camilo and Reed began their collaboration that led to the birth of The Third Root - Morocco project.

Camilo produced this song, “Gnawa Eclipse”, with the flavor of the Gnawa music. While working in the Gnawa Music for The Third Root - Morocco Documentary, Camilo and Reed Rickert created and gigged with a Live Electronic Gnawa Audio/ Visual performance. Here is a little taste of the sights and sounds of Electric Gnawa.

Acapulco in Veracruz

February 23rd, 2008

After a long and exciting 3 Days of The Festivities of the Candelaria, we had to say goodbye to Tlacotalpan. It was a great trip with all-night Fandangos every night. New friends and old friends came together in the fandangos to sing and dance until the sun came up, or until they couldn’t stand anymore. Sitting in a little restaurant the afternoon of our departure (after a LONG night of fandango and some beverage) the crew ate some great Veracruzano cuisine and prepared to part ways. But we had one more surprise before we left, Acapulco.

We met Acapulco the night before in a fandango, he was easy to spot with his bright red flowered shirt. And I found him sleeping in a chair off to the side of the fandango, and suddenly he would wake up, playing and singing, like some one turned on a switch! Well, Acapulco isn’t from Tlacotalpan, Veracruz, he’s from Acapulco. And he will tell you that he is not Jarocho, but in his heart he has the spirit. He has a gift for the improvisation, and he flows with poetry. But have a look and he can tell you his story… Thanks for the final gift before departure.

La Fantasia De Santiago

February 20th, 2008

Camilo and I got to chat with Ramon for a long time, and he had much to share. When Camilo asked Ramon about rhythms you can find in the Son Jarocho music, he began to play La Fantasia De Santiago, a beautiful song by his group, Son De Madera.

Fandangos at Luz de Noche

February 19th, 2008

This was a special moment in this years’ festival. New masters and pioneers of Son Jarocho, Mono Blanco, begin the fandango with the old masters. The new and old come together at Luz de Noche, an epicenter of music during the festival. To learn more about Mono Blanco and their new album of original music check out their website http://www.monoblanco.org/ Thanks to Mario and the rest of the crew at Luz de Noche for their support and enthusiasm for this project. It was like seeing family again when we went back there this year! If anyone needs a fabulous place to stay when they are in Tlacotalpan check this hostel/cultural center!

Tlacotalpan 2008

February 18th, 2008

Hello friends, it has been a while since I last updated the blog. The Third Root just finished an incredible shoot at los festejos de la Candelaria in Tlacotalpan, Veracruz! We met great new and old friends on this trip. Thanks to Arya, Yessinia, and Tenali for their support on this part of our journey! We shot a lot of interviews, Camilo (and I, hehehe!) played in the fandangos, and we captured some great moments. I will start to post some videos from the festival in my following blog entries. To start it off I want to share with you a video with a new great friend of the project Ramon Gutierrez-Herandez, director of one Son Jarocho’s finest groups right now, Son de Madera. Ramon shares some words on what Son Jarocho means to him, and displays his mastery of the requinto, incredible… Thanks Ramon!

La Jaraña, Son Jarocho, y Camilo

Well, The Third Root is preparing for Festejos de La Candelaria, and so I thought this would be a great video to post at this time. Camilo shares with us his passion for the Son Jarocho and how he grew up with these songs. He shares this music in unlikely of all places, the streets of Essaouira, Morocco! He made many friends and fans in this little town. At first glance the Moroccans mistook Camilo for another Moroccan. When Camilo couldn’t respond in the rapid-fire Moroccan Arabic, Darija, he was met with confused faces. But as Camilo shared his music with the community, the locals quickly learned of the flamenco-playing Mexican that was living in town. Young and old would gather around to listen to his jams in the streets with local musicians. Every Moroccan is a fan of music, and just about every one plays an excellent rhythm or is proficient at an instrument. Camilo didn’t have to look for to find music companions, and they embraced his music.
